Republican Psychopathology

"The light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not." John I: 5

I think it's about time to more deeply analyze the psycho-pathology of Republicans. Psychopathology means mental illness and we've discussed Republican mental illness many times in different articles in this newsletter, but there hasn't been a whole entry focused on a psychological explanation for Republican party members' actions during the Clinton debacle as well as their present miserable destructive behavior.

I've said at various times that the Republicans were selfish, hypocritical, and vindictive. Selfish, because they think of no one but themselves or the rich men that are supplying them with cash. (They are particularly fearful about losing their money. That's a reason for their selfishness and lack of generosity). Hypocritical because the charges they leveled at Clinton or other Democrats, they, themselves, have committed. Vindictive because they must punish anyone that either acts against them or says something contrary to their beliefs or criticizes their actions. There is no freedom of speech unless you're a Republican. What is the psychological explanation for their behavior?

Take Trent Lott as an example. Recently his mediocre and racist choice for judge for the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals was defeated in the Senate and he has been ranting and raving ever since. Only hours after Judge Pickering's defeat, Lott tried to block a request for 1.5 million for a Senate commitee to investigate 9-11 snafus, obstructed the nomination of Senator Daschle's aide to the FCC( Federal Communications Commission), and threatened to do more to hinder the workings of the Senate in the days ahead. Yet, the Republicans blocked Clinton's choice for that same position several times. Everytime Lott's authority is bucked he throws a temper tantrum. What does his astrological chart say about this foolish and childish ex-cheerleader.

The first thing I notice is a Mars Sun opposition which indicates a conflict with authority. Since Trent is a Sun sign Libra, with Mars in Aries I'd say that Trent blows up (Mars) when his authority(Sun) is questioned because his masculinity is threatened. A man with an afflicted Sun in Libra can be a bit effeminate; sometimes he might not only appear as a panty waist, but may, in fact, be one. But, of course, any man that acts like Trent does, is unable to admit any of this to himself and the understanding of etiology of these traits remain secreted in his unconscious.

If you can generalize from the specific, the case of Trent Lott reveals that Republicans don't analyze themselves. Many times they are in the dark about their true nature and motivations.

Another individual that should do some self-examination is Tom Delay,(R-Texass) one of the meanest individuals in the House of Representatives. While being an Aries is indicative of self- assertion, (unlike Lott's Libra sun sign) it is opposed by Neptune, which makes his masculinity and assertiveness rather nebulous. He also has Mars in Pisces which is not an aggressive position for Mars. Recently he condemned Senator John Kerry(D-Mass) for questioning the president's war on terrorism which was interesting because Delay avoided the draft while Kerry fought in Vietnam. Not only did Kerry serve in Vietnam, he won the Silver Star and Bronze Star. In an article on Kerry in the April 11 issue of Rolling Stone, Paul Alexander writes that during the war the Senator won the Silver Star because he "left his boat to go ashore and kill a Viet Cong who was about to fire a rocket at his crew." He won the Bronze Star, according to a presidential citation he later received, because, he "discovered he had a man overboard, returned up the river to assist [where he] directed his gunners to provide suppressing fire, while from an exposed position on the bow, his arm bleeding and in pain, with disregard for his personal safety he pulled the man aboard."

So Delay meanly criticized Vietnam war hero, Kerry, while he avoided being drafted, not because he didn't believe in the war like Bill Clinton but because he was afraid and cowardly.

Further generalization from the case of Tom Delay reveals that Republicans are afraid and often cowardly.

In an article titled, "Chicken Hawks Defend the Roost" at workingforchange.com, Tom Berkowitz reveals some of the names of Republicans that never served one day in the military: Speaker of the House Dennis Hassert, Marjority Leader of the House, Dick Armey,(R-Texass) [another meany],Vice President Dick Cheney, Attorney General Asscroft, Karl Rove(another vicious aide to Bush), former Speaker of the House the incredibly nasty and mean Newt Gingrich, and Phil Gramm, Senator from Texass.

Dick Armey's sun sign is Cancer, like George Bush's. Cancers are known for their attachment to their mothers (often a complex whether their mothers are distant or too smothering) and the need to be taken care of. Coupled with being a sentimental, mushy, and fearful Cancer, he has the violent aspect of Mars conjunct Pluto. You figure it out.

Besides being chicken hawks during the Vietnam War, many of the Republicans that ripped into Bill Clinton's morals and condemned him as "trailer trash" are also moral degenerates. Take for example Newt Gingrich who asked for divorce from his first wife while she was in the hospital for a cancer biopsy, and started an affair with a much younger woman while his second wife was trying to take care of her ill mother and brother simultaneously. Of course, that's one of the main reasons he resigned his post after the 1998 election. He was going to be outed for sexual misbehavior. Newt is another one that has Sun in conflicted aspect to Neptune(so far we've mentioned Delay, but I forgot to remind you that George Bush also has this aspect; he's another that never went to war but thinks he can wage one). This configuration must be indicative of moral cowardice in unconscious Republican men that have it.

Another morally hypocritical Republican is Henry Hyde who led the impeachment charge in the House of Representatives against President Clinton. Hyde, as you recall, was outed as homewrecker who had an affair with a married woman which broke up her marriage. An astrological analysis of Hyde's horoscope reveals several interesting astrological configurations. Sun (Ego) and Chiron (wound) in Aries, opposing Saturn (limitation) in Libra, square Mars (Masculinity and sex drive) in Capricorn indicates another man with questions about his masculinity and a tendency to feel inadequate. Venus (love relationships) in Gemini (fickleness) opposing Jupiter (overabundance) square Uranus (sudden, unconventionality) would reveal that Hyde compensated for his feelings of inadequacy by having sudden unconventional love affairs.

Part of the Republican psychopathology involves the tendency to compartmentalize, to wall off behaviors and feelings that they don't want to look at. Serial killers, like Ted Bundy, had an excellent ability to compartmentalize. So do many Republicans. To be able to attack Clinton either while being involved with an illicit affair like Gingrich, or being a homewrecker 30 years ago in the past like Hyde, indicates that Republicans have accepted a "my shit don't stink" attitude in order to be able to attack a political opponent with impunity. Further, this attitude is a way to push away unacceptable feelings like lust or cowardice, or inadequacy by projecting these taboo feelings on others. They don't have to take responsibility for their feelings, or own them, they can simply use the nearest hook.

Clinton made the best hook because not only was he guilty of some sexual trangressions, he was the focus of a huge reservoir of Republican envy and fear. Envy because he was a good-looking man that liked women and attracted them instantly, and fear, because he was smart and as David Brock says in his book, Blinded by the Right, the most politically talented individual in the last 30 years.

Clinton triggered Republican fears about their own inadequacies on so many different levels that the only response was to attack and do everything in power to discredit him and remove him from office.

What are we to do about destructive unconscious Republicans that are ruining our government and our democratic way of life? Continue to put the light on them through as many avenues as possible. What the I Ching says with regards to the Hexagram Sun (The Gentle the Penetrating Wind) is apropo: "In human life it is penetrating clarity of judgment that thwarts all dark hidden motives. In the life of the community it is the powerful influence of a great personality that uncovers and breaks up those intrigues which shun the light of day."
